The graceful and elegant city of Chennai  is the  CAPITAL  of  Tamil  Nadu. The city, inspite  of  its recent developments, retains  some of  its old-world look  with  temples  like  the  Kapaleeswarar  in  Mylapore   and   that   of   Parthasarathy inTriplicane.  But  its  first  claim  to  fame  is the Marina, a wonderful foreshore  of  fine sandy beach considered the second longest in the world.  Things to see in the city are its 300 years  old  Fort St.George  with its  battlements and  ramparts stillintact, its Church of St. Mary the Fort Museum, the Light House, the National Art Gallery and the Madras Museum. The San Thome Basilica, The Theosophical Society in Adyar, Kalakshetra the dance school, The Guindy National Park, the adjoining Snake park and the mini zoo, The Memorials to Gandhi, Rajaji and Kamaraj, The Valluvar Kottam Memorial to the poet  Thiruvalluvar and the Vandaloor Zoological Park are some of the other attractions of the city.

MAHABALIPURAM

No visit to Chennai is complete without a trip to the sea-side resort of Mahabalipuram (60kms).  Famous the World over are  its beautiful rock-cut temples, named after the five Pandava brothers are excellent examples of Pallava art. One skillfully  carved rock, called Arjuna’s Penance, is said to be the largest basrelief sculpture in the World.  It shows the figure of an  ascetic believed to be Arjuna doing penance to obtain a boon from Lord Siva. The Shore Temple dates back to the second half of the 7th century and has two shrines, one dedicated to Vishnu and the other to Siva.  It is now a protected monument and hence not open to worship. The Mahabalipuram Dance Festival is conducted every year during January – February.
