| KANCHIPURAM
Just
about 80 kms from Chennai is Kanchipuram, a temple town with a history
dating back to over 23 centuries. Called "The City of Thousand Temples"
it is one of the seven sacred cities of India. Today its gorgeously
coloured silks are perhaps better known in the world than its temples.
Temple festivals are held throughout the year. The Ekambareswarar temple
sprawls over 20 acres and is said to be the largest Siva temple.
It has a magnificent 1000 pillared hall and a towering gopuram, at almost
185 meters, one of the tallest in South India. The Kailasanathar
Temple, over 1000 years old, is a Pallava creation dedicated to Lord Siva.
Vaikuntanathar Perumal temple has three sanctums, one atop the other. Kamakshi
temple, dedicated to the goddess Kamakshi is one of the three places
of Sakthi worship in the country. Some of the most beautiful sculptures
in all Kanchipuram are to be found in the Varadaraja temple. The town also
hosts the Kamakodi Pitham established by Adi Sankara.
